Overview

GL's PacketExpert™ is a comprehensive Ethernet Tester available for 1Gbps, and 10 Gbps networks. PacketExpert™ finds use in testing a wide range of networks - from testing individual links/switches, testing local Ethernet/IP networks (LAN), end-to-end testing of Wide Area Networks (WAN), testing Core/MPLS networks, validate Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and much more. The PacketExpert™ applications include: Wirespeed BERT and Loopback, RFC2544 Tests, Record Playback, Packet Broker, Multistream Traffic Generator and Analyzer, ExpertTCP™ and ExpertSAM™. PaketExpert™ supports Command line Interface (CLI) and APIs to access all functionalities for remote testing through various clients such as TCL, C# and many others.


Wirespeed BERT

Platforms: PacketExpert™ 1G, PacketExpert™ 10G

User can perform Wirespeed BERT simultaneously on all Optical or Electrical ports of up to 10 Gbps capacity. The application allows generating and analyzing specific BER patterns through Ethernet frames at specified rates. The payload (or pattern) of received frames are analyzed in detail to detect errors and mismatch in the payload. Test can be performed at all layers - Layer1, Framed Ethernet (Layer2), Stacked VLAN (Q-in-Q), Stacked MPLS (Layer 2.5), IP and UDP.

Some of its other important features are:

  • Supports generating various PRBS patterns including constant patterns such as All Ones, All Zeroes, Alternate Ones-Zeroes and user-defined test patterns ranging from 1 bit to 32 bits
  • Selection of optional sequence number insertion allows detecting out-of-sequence packets and packet loss
  • Both BERT and Loopback support Stacked VLAN and Stacked MPLS. BERT can be configured to send/receive streams with Stacked VLAN/Stacked MPLS frames
  • BERT and Loopback functionality can be accessed via various combinations, according to the testing needs
  • All Port BERT - all 4 ports run BERT (at full wirespeed, simultaneous Tx and Rx) per unit

     

RFC 2544 Testing

Platforms: PacketExpert™ 1G, PacketExpert™ 10G

Perform Throughput, Latency, Frame Loss and Back to Back tests as specified in RFC 2544. Similar to BERT, RFC 2544 can be done over Framed Ethernet (Layer2), Stacked VLAN (Q-in-Q), Stacked MPLS, IP or UDP.

  • RFC 2544 allows the test frame to be configured with Stacked VLAN and Stacked MPLS.
  • End to end RFC 2544 test can be conducted across a Carrier Ethernet/MPLS network It includes various parameter configurations such as Test Selection, Frame Sizes, Unidirectional/Bidirectional, Number of trials, Trial Duration, and many more
  • The application also provides user-defined options to configure various packet header parameters like MAC addresses, IP addresses, UDP ports, VLAN ID, MPLS Labels.

     

ITU-T Y.1564 standard Carrier Ethernet Validation (ExpertSAM™)

Platforms: PacketExpert™ 1G, PacketExpert™ 10G

ExpertSAM™ is intended for multiservice testing to measure the maximum performance of the Network Under Test or the Ethernet-based services for its ability to carry a variety of traffic (voice, data, and video) at defined performance levels. In particular, it is aimed at addressing limitations of legacy RFC 2544 test procedures, especially for Service Level Agreements (SLA).

  • A single test is conducted to validate SLAs as per ITU-T Y.1564 standard. The ITU-T Y.1564 is built around two key subtests, the Service Configuration Test(SCT) and the Service Performance Test (SPT). 
  • Measures Bandwidth CIR (Committed Information Rate) / EIR (Excess Information Rate)/Overshoot traffic, Frame Loss, Frame Delay and Frame Delay Variation and compares to the expected values for each service ensuring it is within its committed range or the threshold defined for guaranteed traffic such as CIR
  • Performs round-trip measurements in combination with a remote loopback. In this case, the results reflect the average of both Tx and Rx test directions.

     

Packet Capture & Playback

Platforms: PacketExpert™ 1G, PacketExpert™ 10G

Wirespeed Capture and Playback module allows network administrators to capture traffic at wirespeed, and precisely simulate/recreate live network traffic conditions.

  • Continuous and simultaneous Long Term Capture along with real-time transfer to host PC. This allows for huge file capture limitation being only the hard disk space
  • Supports simultaneous capture or playback functions on multiple ports - both on 10G or 1G ports
  • Filter for packets of interest, using a powerful wirespeed hardware based filter, reducing the bandwidth needed to transfer to host
  • Record the captures to a file - supports popular capture file formats such as *.pcap, *.ngpcap, *.hdl, and *.dat.
  • Continuous Playback on the same port where capture is running
  • Also supports simultaneous Packet Capture and Playback on the same port
  • Precisely simulate/recreate live network traffic conditions
  • Supports the 'As per File" option to precisely regenerate the traffic from a pre-recorded file i.e. traffic is transmitted at the precise rate at which it was captured (by maintaining the recorded timestamps)
  • High Precision Wirespeed Ethernet Packet Capture to a captured file
    • Supports limited lossless capture and continuous capture modes
    • In lossless capture, the recording stops automatically when the Onboard buffer fills up In continuous capture, the recording continues even after the Onboard buffer is full with discontinuous recording indication

       

Multi Stream Traffic Generator & Analyzer

Platforms: PacketExpert™ 1G, PacketExpert™ 10G

Multi Stream UDP/TCP Traffic Generator and Analyzer is capable of generating multi-streams (up to 16 UDP/TCP streams) Ethernet traffic of varying packet length and analyzing the loopback traffic. Supports ExpertTCP™ test methodology based on RFC 6349 to measure TCP throughput, RTT and optimal window size.

Other Important features include:

  • Test tool with both Ethernet traffic generation and analysis capabilities in one-box
  • Generate and analyse packets at 1GigE and 10GigE line rates, with zero packet loss
  • Traffic Generation -
    • Supports multiple streams with varying test configurations.
    • EMIX frame sizes supported per service - up to 5 frame sizes can be defined per stream
    • Stacked VLAN supported - C-Tag and S-Tag to simulate Carrier Ethernet traffic
  • Traffic Analysis -
    • KPIs supported - Information Rate (IR) or Throughput, Frame Loss Ratio (FLR) or Packet Loss, Frame Transfer Delay (FTD) or Latency, and Frame Delay Variation (FDV) or Jitter

    • Measures TCP Throughput, Round Trip Time (RTT), Optimal TCP Window size and also gives RFC 6349 specific metrics like Buffer Delay Percentage, TCP Efficiency etc.

       

Wirespeed Ethernet Tap
(PacketBroker™)

Platforms: PacketExpert™ 1G, PacketExpert™ 10G

The PacketBroker™ allows the Ethernet test tool to be used as a highly precise non-intrusive Wirespeed Ethernet Tap. It has all the necessary features packaged within to capture real world traffic, define multiple filters for drilling-down to traffic of interest, generate triggers based on packet filters, and transmit filtered/aggregated/modified packets for deep-packet data analysis.

Other features include -

  • Network Tap - capable of handling bidirectional 100% wirespeed traffic up to 10 Gbps
  • Wirespeed Filtering - powerful and easy to use
  • Trigger - capable of generating event driven triggers based on certain packet filters
  • Packet Forwarding - For each packet that satisfies filter criteria, it will be time-stamped, and forwarded through output ports for further analysis or storage
